Mode setting
-
Folks, I use iRacing. In the past with my old Thrustmaster wheel I gave iRFFB a go. The most significant addition over vanilla iRacing FFB was the Seat of Pants setting which gave a feeling of weight and countersteering to my input.
I’ve noticed that I get this feeling with my new SW20 wheel. Is it something within the software or am I making it up?
Is there a setting for it.
I’m not sure what mode is/does other than the description of smoothing. Can someone explain this. I’m not sure my hands are so sensitive to feel a difference without knowing. -
We run the FFB loop at 6KHz (6x faster than the max possible FFB input rate over USB and 100x faster than vanilla iRacing FFB).
This allows us to upscale and interpolate the incoming FFB signal. We have a self-imposed 2msec window in which to process and handover to the motor control stage. To the best of my knowledge, iRFFB uses delayed (16ms minimum) iRacing telemetry data to create a 360Hz FFB signal which includes the SOP effects.
The response from the wheelbase depends on getting as true a signal as possible to the motor control stage. The "Controller Modes" implement the upscaling & interpolation in 10 different ways allowing you to tailor the FFB input to the motor control stage to the car/track combination as well as your mood/tolerance.
Lower values are more detailed but more susceptible to extraneous noise. The "Controller Bandwidth" allows you to tailor the motor control stage to your mood/tolerance.
Higher values are more responsive but can introduce a metallic feel to the response. There is no golden combination that works for all sims, tracks and cars as there are too many variables in play including the weight of your steering wheel which is measured in the calibration phase of every system start-up.
Our philosophy is to run the combination of settings that work for you in the present with the expectation that over time your preferences will change and the tools exist to adapt the wheelbase's behaviour accordingly.

@sim-plicity-dev fantastic explanation, thanks very much. very helpful

@sim-plicity-dev Thanks for that explanation. So I take it the SOP effect I think I’m feeling isn’t actually an added effect? It’s more likely to be the new tyre model on the L49.
Also where does “extraneous noise” come from? Is that an electrical/motor term or a Sim related detail?
